A hot spot is a place deep under the ocean. It sends hot rock up to the sea floor.

This hot rock builds big mountains. Some mountains grow to become islands. These islands are Hawaii.

The ocean floor moves like a slow belt. It carries the islands away from the hot spot. This makes a long chain of mountains.

Old islands move far away. They get worn down by the sea. They sink back under the water.

New islands grow where the hot spot is. The chain shows us how the floor moves. It is a giant map of the deep sea.
