The name comes from an old word meaning quiet or silent. This is because players must be very attentive. It is a trick-taking game. This means players try to win rounds called tricks.

Four people play the game. They form two teams. Partners sit across from each other. You use a standard pack of 52 cards.

The dealer gives 13 cards to each person. The last card dealt is turned face up. This card sets the trump suit. Trumps are special cards that beat any other suit.

Players must follow the suit that was led. If they cannot, they may play a trump. The highest card wins the trick.
