People play it in teams. Most often, four people play together. Two people work on one team. This makes it a great social game.

You use a small deck of cards. It can have 24 to 32 cards. The Joker was added to card packs in the 1850s. In some places, like Britain, the Joker is the highest card. People call it the "Benny."

Players try to win tricks. A trick is one round of cards. One player leads a card. Others must follow that suit if they can. The highest card wins the trick. The winner leads the next round.

Teams try to pick a "trump" suit. This suit has special power. The Jack is a very strong card in Euchre. The top Jack is called the "Right Bower." The other Jack of the same color is the "Left Bower."

If the makers do not win enough tricks, they are "euchred." This means the other team gets points. If a team wins every trick, it is called a "march." This earns them two points.
