Hearts (card game)

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Hearts is a fun card game for three to six people. Most people play with four players. It is a trick-taking game. This means players try to win rounds called tricks. But Hearts is very different from other games. In most games, you want to win tricks. In Hearts, you want to avoid them!

The main goal is to avoid winning cards from the heart suit. Each heart card gives you penalty points. The player with the lowest score wins. Some versions use a special card called the Queen of Spades. People call this card the Black Lady. It is worth 13 points!

In many versions, you can pass cards to other players. This lets you get rid of bad cards. You can also try a bold move called "shooting the moon." This is when you try to win every single penalty card. If you succeed, you get a huge score boost!

Hearts is an old game. It was recorded in the United States in the 1880s. It is a very social game. One old book said it was a pleasant game that makes people laugh.
