Hearts (card game)

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Hearts is a very special kind of card game. Most card games ask you to win as many rounds as possible. These rounds are called tricks. In Hearts, the goal is the exact opposite. You want to avoid winning tricks that contain certain cards.

This is called an evasion-type game. Players try to dodge penalty cards to keep their scores low. The person with the fewest points at the end wins the game. It is a game of skill, planning, and sometimes a lot of laughter.

To play, you usually need four people and a standard 52-card deck. Each player gets thirteen cards.

On your turn, you must follow the suit that was led. If you cannot follow that suit, you can play any other card. This is a chance to get rid of cards you do not want. In some versions, players pass three cards to a neighbor before the game starts. This helps you get rid of high cards that might force you to win a trick.

One exciting rule is called "shooting the moon." This happens if a player manages to take every single penalty card. If they do, they get a huge score boost instead of a penalty.

People have been playing versions of this game for a long time. A game called Reversis was popular in Spain around the year 1750. It gave penalty points for winning tricks. Hearts itself was recorded in the United States during the 1880s.

A book from 1887 called The Standard Hoyle described it as a very pleasant game. It also said the game was likely of German origin. Over the years, many different ways to play have appeared in different countries.

There are many different ways to score points in Hearts. In the original version, every heart card was a penalty. Some versions used chips to keep track of the points. One way was called the "Double or Eagle Game." In that version, the Ace of Hearts was worth 14 chips. The King was worth 13, and the Queen was worth 12.

In 1909, a new version called Black Lady became popular. This version added the Queen of Spades as a very big penalty. She is often called the "Black Lady" and is worth 13 points. In Great Britain, a version called Black Maria uses even more penalty cards.

Hearts is a game that connects people through play. It has moved from paper books to computer screens. For many years, Microsoft Windows included a version of the game in its software.

This helped many people learn how to play it digitally. Even though there are many different rules, the feeling of the game stays the same. It is a game of careful choices and surprising turns. Whether you play with friends or on a computer, it is always an adventure.
