People use these cards in two main ways today. Many people use them to play trick-taking card games. Others use them for divination, which is a way of seeking meaning or telling fortunes. These two uses led to different kinds of decks. Some decks are made specifically for gaming. Other decks are designed for reading cards to find deeper meanings.

A standard tarot deck has a very specific structure. It includes four different suits. These suits might be batons, coins, cups, or swords. Each suit contains 14 cards in total. You will find ten number cards, ranging from the Ace to ten. There are also four face cards: the King, Queen, Knight, and Jack.

Beyond these suits, the deck has a separate group of 21 trump cards. There is also one single, special card known as the Fool. In some games, the Fool can be the highest trump card.

The history of tarot begins in northern Italy.

The first recorded tarot decks appeared in places like Milan and Ferrara between 1440 and 1450. Back then, they were called "trionfi," which means triumph cards. The oldest surviving decks are the Visconti-Sforza Tarot. These were hand-painted for the rulers of the Duchy of Milan in the mid-15th century. Some very early decks were even custom-made for dukes. One such deck described by Martiano da Tortona likely existed between 1418 and 1425.

As time passed, tarot games spread across much of Europe.

They moved from Italy into France and Switzerland during the Italian Wars. Different regions developed their own ways of playing and ordering the cards. For example, the Tarot of Marseilles became a very famous version in France. In the 18th century, French Tarot was mostly played in Provence. However, it became very popular again later. By 1973, a special association was formed to support the game in France.

Today, you can find tarot being used in many different countries. In Austria, the game Königrufen is very popular and has international tournaments. People in Italy still play regional games like Ottocento or Sicilian Tarocchi. Even in Denmark, some people still play traditional tarot games. While the gaming side of tarot has changed over hundreds of years, it remains a huge part of many cultures. Whether for a fun game or for seeking meaning, these cards continue to fascinate people around the world.
