Some people also call this fate. This concept suggests there is a fixed order to the universe. It might mean a person has a set future. It can also mean the whole world follows a plan. Many people wonder if they can change what is coming. This idea has shaped how humans see their lives for a long time.

Different cultures have different ways of describing this. In ancient Greek myths, three women called the Moirai spin threads. These threads represent the fate of every person. Roman myths call these figures the Parcae. Norse myths have the Norns who do the same thing. They use the mystic spinning of threads to decide what happens. This shows how people once imagined life being woven together.

History shows many different views on this topic. The earliest mentions come from cuneiform script. This old writing tells of a mythical Tablet of Destinies. In Sumerian stories, a leader could decide things. In Babylonian religion, a god named Nabu wrote down fates. He used his role as a god of writing to do this. He worked with the Anunnaki to decree what would happen to humans.

Philosophers have debated these ideas for many centuries. The Stoics believed a divine plan guided all actions. They thought our souls are part of a huge network of fate. However, the Epicureans disagreed with this view. They believed human actions are voluntary if a person is rational. In the 19th century, thinkers like Schopenhauer and Nietzsche added new ideas. Nietzsche spoke of "Amor fati," which means loving one's fate.

We can still see these ideas in books and movies today. Many legends show people trying to outrun their fate. This theme appears in the play Macbeth by Shakespeare. It is also in the movie The Matrix with the character Neo. Even in China, the idea of Ming yun exists. This means life is a mix of what is given and what we choose. It is a way to see life as both fixed and flexible.
