Shamanism is a spiritual practice involving a person called a shaman.

This person acts as a messenger between humans and the spirit world. They often enter an altered state of consciousness, such as a trance. In this state, they interact with unseen realities to help their community. One main goal is to direct spiritual energies into the physical world. This can be done for healing or for divination, which means finding answers to questions.

How a shaman works is a very important part of the practice. They are believed to be intermediaries who can visit other dimensions. Some traditions say they can mend a person's soul to heal their body. By fixing the spirit, they aim to restore balance and wholeness to the individual. Shamans might also enter the supernatural realm to find solutions to community problems. They may seek guidance for souls that have become lost or misguided. This work is done to bring peace and health back to the human world.

The history of the word shaman is quite interesting to many researchers. The term likely comes from the Tungusic languages of North Asia. It may specifically come from the Evenki language. Some people think it might relate to a Sanskrit word for a holy figure.

The word was brought to Western Europe by people like Nicolaes Witsen. He was a Dutch explorer who wrote about his travels in the 1600s. Another merchant named Adam Brand helped introduce the word to English speakers in 1698. For a long time, people from outside these cultures have studied these traditions.

Many different scholars study shamanism today using many different tools. Anthropologists, archeologists, and historians all look at these practices. There are even academic journals just for studying shamanism. Some experts, like Manvir Singh, look for specific features like healing and trance. Others, like the historian Ronald Hutton, have noted different ways the term is used.

Some people use the term to describe many different religions in Asia, Africa, and the Americas. This shows how much interest there is in these diverse ways of life.

It is important to know that many people disagree about the word shamanism. Some experts, like Alice Kehoe, argue that the term can be too broad. They worry it might ignore the unique ways each specific tribe lives. They suggest that every nation has its own special terms in its own language. Some thinkers even suggest using words like "shamanhood" to show this diversity.

Despite these debates, many traditions are still very much alive. For example, the Tuvan people in a remote part of Russia have preserved their ways. Many other communities are also working to reclaim their dynamic traditions today.
