The bardo is a special idea about a middle state. It is a time that happens between death and rebirth.

Some people call this a transitional or liminal state. This means it is a space between two different stages of life. In Tibetan Buddhism, the bardo is a very important concept. It is the main theme in a text called the Bardo Thodol. Many people know this book as the Tibetan Book of the Dead. This book is meant to guide a person through the bardo. It also helps the people they leave behind while they are grieving.

Many different things can happen during this time. According to Tibetan tradition, a person's consciousness is not in a physical body. They might experience many different things in a certain order. First, they might have very clear experiences of reality. Later, they might see hallucinations that feel scary. These visions can come from a person's past unskillful actions. For people who have trained their minds, the bardo is a great chance for insight. For others, it can be a place of danger. This is because visions might push them into a rebirth they do not want.

This idea has a long history in different groups of Buddhists. The concept came from the Vedic-Upanishadic philosophical tradition. Soon after Gautama Buddha died, different schools began to talk about it. Some schools, like the Sarvāstivāda, accepted the idea of an intermediate existence. They called it "antarābhava" in Sanskrit. Other groups, like the Theravāda, did not accept this idea. During a meeting called the third Council in Pataliputra, some leaders rejected the concept. Later, some monks brought the idea back through special manuscripts. Some thinkers believed this state could last for up to 49 days.

There are many ways to group the different stages of the bardo. Some traditions say there are six specific bardos. One is the Bardo of This Life, which lasts from birth until death. Another is the Bardo of Dreams, where people can practice dream yoga. There is also the Bardo of Meditation for advanced practitioners. The Bardo of Dying begins when the dying process starts. This leads to a state called the clear light of death. After the final breath, the fifth bardo of luminosity begins with visions. Finally, the sixth bardo involves a mental body that leads to a new birth.

People also use the word "bardo" in other ways today. It can be a metaphor for times when life feels paused. For example, a person might feel they are in a bardo during an illness. A meditation retreat can also feel like a bardo. These times can be good for spiritual progress because there are fewer outside distractions. However, they can also be hard because a person's own impulses might become stronger. Over the years, many different people have studied and written about these states. They have looked at the bardo through many different lenses and views.
