He is expected to appear on Earth during a time of decline. This is a time when the original teachings of Gautama Buddha have been forgotten or lost. When he arrives, he will re-establish the Buddha's Dharma on Earth. His teachings will be very similar to the ones taught by Gautama. This arrival offers a sense of hope for a better world. Many followers hope to live in a time when they can learn from him.

History shows that people have wondered about Maitreya for a very long time. The name Metteyya appears in the Pali Canon, which is a collection of early Buddhist texts.

Some scholars think his name might be related to ancient Indo-Iranian names like Mitra. Others look at the many different ways he is described in holy books. There are many Mahāyāna sutras that discuss his life and work. Some of these books were translated by people like Kumārajīva and Yijing. These texts help explain his role as a bodhisattva, or a being working toward enlightenment.

Artists have used many different styles to show what Maitreya looks like.

Some people believe he will arrive in 5,670,000,000 years. This is part of a very long cosmic period called a kalpa. Even though that is a huge number, the idea of a future Buddha brings comfort. It links the teachings of the past to a bright future. This belief helps many people stay positive about the world's path.
