Many people call this tradition Yungdrung Bon. Followers of this faith are known as Bonpos. Scholars often study how Bon relates to Tibetan Buddhism. Some thinkers see Bon as a variant of Buddhism. Others believe it keeps very old traditions from before Buddhism arrived. This relationship has been a subject of much debate among experts.

Followers believe the religion started in a kingdom called Zhangzhung. This land was located around Mount Kailash in the Himalayas. Bonpos say the faith moved from Zhangzhung into Tibet. They identify Tonpa Shenrab Miwo as the founder of Bon.

He is seen as a Buddha who lived long ago. Some sources say he was born around 1917 BCE. He is said to have come from a holy land called Olmo Lungring. He taught people how to live and helped them find peace.

There are different types of Bon that have developed over time. Prehistoric Bon is an ancient system that is mostly extinct today. Eternal Bon, or Yungdrung Bon, emerged between the 8th and 11th centuries. This version is very similar to Nyingma Buddhism.

There is also New Bon, which began in the 14th century. This type mixes Eternal Bon with ideas from Tibetan Buddhism. Some people in Bhutan even practice a version called Buddhist Bon. This allows them to follow both traditions at once.

Bon uses special symbols to show what they believe. The word Yungdrung refers to a left-facing swastika.

This symbol stands for eternity and being indestructible. It is the main symbol on the Bon flag. The flag also has stripes for five elements. These are space, fire, air, earth, and water. These elements represent everything in the world. The symbol shows the power of enlightened action.

Learning about Bon has changed over many years. Early Western scholars often viewed Bon through a Buddhist lens. They sometimes called it shamanism or animism. However, newer scholars study Bon as its own independent tradition.

After 1950, many Bonpo scholars moved to Europe and North America. This helped more people around the world learn about the faith. Today, Bonpo centers can be found in many different cities globally. It remains a living tradition for many Tibetans today.
