He was born near Lhasa in 1543. People believed he was the reincarnation of a man named Gendun Gyatso. He spent much of his life studying and teaching at Drepung Monastery. He eventually became the abbot, which is a high leader, at that monastery. He was also recognized as an abbot at Sera Monastery. His reputation for wisdom spread very quickly among many people.

One of the most famous things about Sonam Gyatso is his title. In 1578, a leader named Altan Khan gave him the title of Dalai Lama. This name comes from Mongolian words. Altan Khan also gave this title to the two leaders who came before Sonam Gyatso. This made him the 3rd Dalai Lama.

This title helped the Gelug school grow much stronger in Tibet. It created a special bond between the monks and the Mongolians. This bond helped the Gelug school become a major power in the region.

Sonam Gyatso traveled a long way to reach Mongolia to teach. He first met Altan Khan in 1577.

The journey was a massive event with many people involved. When he arrived, he was met by over ten thousand people. Five hundred horsemen even came to escort him to the court. Altan Khan wore a white robe to show his devotion. In return for the title, Sonam Gyatso called Altan Khan the "Brahma," or the king of religion. They worked together to spread Buddhist teachings to the Mongol tribes.

His teachings changed how many people lived their daily lives. Sonam Gyatso told the people to stop certain old practices. He said they should stop animal sacrifices and stop taking lives in war.

He also wanted to end the practice of women being burned on funeral pyres. Because of his work, most Mongolians became Buddhists within fifty years. They built the first Mongolian monastery, called Thegchen Chonkhor. Many thousands of monks joined the Gelug school during this time.

Sonam Gyatso also built many beautiful places for prayer and study. He founded the Kumbum Monastery at the birthplace of Je Tsongkhapa. He also started the Lithang Monastery in Eastern Tibet. Another place he built was the Namgyal Monastery in 1571. This became the personal monastery for all the Dalai Lamas who followed him.
