This title is part of a much longer name. A leader named Altan Khan gave the full title to Sonam Gyatso in 1578. He did this at the Yanghua Monastery to show his thanks. Sonam Gyatso became the 3rd Dalai Lama in this line. The first two leaders in the line were given the title after they passed away.

Some stories say this connection goes back through many lifetimes. These stories include ancient kings and even famous sages. One account says the 14th Dalai Lama is the 74th in a long line. This line can be traced back to a boy from the time of the Buddha. These beliefs help connect the leaders to a very long history.

Building this religious line took many steps over hundreds of years.

The first leader, Gendun Drup, was a student of a teacher named Tsongkhapa. He studied very hard at a monastery called Narthang. He passed twelve different grades of monkhood to show his skill. Later, the 2nd Dalai Lama helped build a new monastery called Chokorgyel. He also started a way to find new leaders using visions at a lake. The 3rd Dalai Lama traveled to Mongolia to teach many new people.

For a long time, the Dalai Lama also helped run the government.

From the year 1642 to 1951, they led the secular government of Tibet. This government was called the Ganden Phodrang. The leaders worked in a place known as Lhasa. Sometimes they worked with other powerful groups like the Mongols or the Qing dynasty. This was often called a priest and patron relationship. In this way, one group gave protection while the other gave spiritual guidance.

The current leader is the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso. He had to leave his home in Lhasa in 1959. Now, he lives in a place called Dharamshala in India. He works hard to bring different groups of people together. He wants to be a symbol of nationhood for all Tibetans. Even though he lives far from home, his ideas still travel far. He continues to teach people about peace and Buddhist values.
