The Dalai Lama is the spiritual leader of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism.

The title is part of a longer name: "Holiness Knowing Everything Vajradhara Dalai Lama." This name was given by Altan Khan in 1578. He offered it to Sonam Gyatso at the Yanghua Monastery. Sonam Gyatso became the 3rd Dalai Lama in this lineage. The first two leaders received the title after they died.

Today, the Dalai Lama serves as a symbol of unity for the Tibetan people. He represents Buddhist values that reach beyond specific religious schools.

Many followers believe the Dalai Lama is an incarnation of Avalokiteśvara. This is a bodhisattva known for great compassion.

Some traditions trace this connection back through many lifetimes. These stories include ancient Tibetan kings and famous sages. One account states the 14th Dalai Lama is the 74th in a lineage. This line supposedly traces back to a Brahmin boy from the time of the Buddha. This belief connects the leaders to a deep, mythical history.

Building this religious institution took many steps over several centuries.

The 1st Dalai Lama, Gendun Drup, was a student of Tsongkhapa. He studied at the Narthang monastery and passed twelve grades of monkhood. The 2nd Dalai Lama built the Chokorgyel monastery. He also established a method to find new incarnations using visions at Lhamo Lhatso lake. The 3rd Dalai Lama traveled to Mongolia to teach. His influence helped create a spiritual empire that lasted into the modern age.

The 5th Dalai Lama established a religious and political reign over Tibet.

In 1642, he used military help from Gushri Khan to found this era. This reign lasted for over 300 years. From 1642 to 1951, the Dalai Lamas or their regents led the Ganden Phodrang government. This government was based in Lhasa. During this time, Tibet functioned as a protectorate under Qing China rule. It governed the Tibetan Plateau while maintaining varying degrees of autonomy.

History shows a complex relationship between religious and secular power.

This is often called the mchod yon, or "priest and patron" relationship. In this system, a secular patron provides political protection. In return, the religious leader offers spiritual guidance and legitimacy. This alliance involved groups like the Mongols, Manchus, and Chinese authorities. Some historians argue this allowed Tibet to keep its culture. Others say it shows how powerful states controlled Tibet.

The 13th Dalai Lama declared Tibet's independence after the Qing dynasty fell in 1912. However, this was not formally recognized by international law. In 1951, the 14th Dalai Lama ratified the Seventeen Point Agreement with China. He later revoked this agreement in 1959.

The 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, escaped from Lhasa during a Tibetan uprising. He now lives in exile in Dharamshala, India. Since 2005, he has publicly agreed that Tibet is part of China. He no longer supports political separatism.

The question of how a Dalai Lama is chosen is also important. Tibetan Buddhist doctrine says the Dalai Lama chooses his own reincarnation. However, Chinese authorities have asserted the right to oversee these selections. This was formalized in 1793 through the "29-Article Ordinance." The 14th Dalai Lama opposes this government involvement. He believes his reincarnation should not be shaped by external political influence. This remains a major point of debate in modern history.
