He was the first leader to hold both spiritual and political authority over Tibet. Because of his massive influence, he is often called the "Great Fifth." He unified Tibet under the Ganden Phodrang government. This was achieved through the military support of Gushri Khan. He also established Tibet as an independent head of state. He managed complex relationships with the Qing dynasty and Mongolia. He even began a custom of meeting early European explorers.

His early life was marked by political tension and family struggle.

He was born in the Chonggye Valley to a noble family. His father was Dudul Rabten, a local ruler. His mother was Tricham, who had links to the Jonangpa Kagyu tradition. His family belonged to the aristocratic Zahor lineage. This family had lived at Taktsé Castle since the 14th century. However, his father was arrested in 1618 for a political plot. This plot involved an attempt to overthrow the leader of the Tsang hegemony. His father later died in captivity in 1626 at Samdruptse.

Identifying the reincarnation of a Dalai Lama is a complex process.

After the 4th Dalai Lama died in 1616, the King of Tsang banned searches for his successor. Despite this, lamas conducted secret divination rituals at Radeng monastery. One method used was called a doughball divination. They chose his name from three potential candidates. Sonam Choephel is credited with discovering the incarnation. Other religious groups also tried to claim the child as their own. His parents resisted these various demands to protect him.

Lobsang Gyatso received a deep and varied religious education.

He became a novice monk at Drepung Monastery. He received full ordination at the Jokhang Temple in 1638. While he was trained in the Gelugpa tradition, he also studied Nyingmapa doctrines. He considered the Nyingma master Zur Choying Rangdrol to be his "root guru." This means Rangdrol was his most important spiritual teacher. He also took Nyingma tantric empowerments, which are special religious rites. This helped him become a very broad scholar.

He maintained a vital relationship with the Panchen Lama.

The Panchen Lama was his senior tutor and close ally. The 5th Dalai Lama declared the Panchen Lama to be an incarnation of Amitābha. He requested that the Panchen Lama make Tashilhunpo Monastery his permanent seat. This established a lasting tradition for all future Panchen Lamas. The two offices were known as "Father/Son Protectors." This name described their deep spiritual connection. They shared a teacher-disciple relationship that lasted through many lifetimes.

As a ruler, he reorganized the structure of the Tibetan state.

He worked to resolve divides between different religious sects. His goal was to create a pluralist theocracy. A theocracy is a system where religious leaders hold political power. This new system helped bring stability to the region.
