Chagatai Khanate

history Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Chagatai Khanate was a large land ruled by the descendants of Chagatai Khan. He was the second son of the famous leader Genghis Khan.

This land was often called the Middle Empire. It sat right in the center of Eurasia. Travelers noted it was between the lands of China, India, and Iraq.

Because of its location, it was a very important part of the world. It helped connect different regions together.

Rules and power changed many times in this land. At first, the leaders followed orders from the Great Khan. However, by the time of Kublai Khan, leaders like Ghiyas-ud-din Baraq stopped obeying.

The leaders often fought to keep their power. Some leaders were very young and needed help to rule. In those times, mothers often acted as regents to manage the state. This meant they made important decisions for the people. These shifts in power changed how the land was governed.

Religion also played a big role in the history of the khanate. Many rulers eventually chose to follow Islam. Mubarak Shah was the first Chagatai khan to convert to this faith.

Later, things became difficult for people of different faiths. A ruler named 'Ali-Sultan persecuted those who were not Muslim. He even ordered the death of several Franciscan monks in 1339.

This period showed how much religion could change a society.

Over time, the huge empire began to break apart. It split into smaller pieces during the 1340s. One part was called Moghulistan.

Other areas became the Yarkent and Turpan Khanates. The land in Transoxiana was eventually taken by the Timurid Empire. The rulers there lost their real power and became political prisoners. This fragmentation made the empire much smaller than it once was. It was a slow process of losing land and control.

Even as the empire shrank, some parts lasted a very long time. The descendants of Chagatai Khan still ruled in some areas for centuries. For example, the Kumul Khanate was established in 1696.

This group stayed part of China during the Qing dynasty. The very last part of this long dynasty ended in 1930. This marked the end of a story that began with Genghis Khan. It shows how one family's rule can span hundreds of years.
