Khanate of Kokand

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Khanate of Kokand was a large state in Central Asia.

It sat in the Fergana Valley. Today, this land is split between four countries. These are Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Kazakhstan. At its peak, the land reached from the Ulu Tau mountains to the south. It also stretched from the Aq Masjid in the west to Karakol in the east. This state was a place where many different people lived together.

Many different groups of people made up the population. Some were farmers who lived in cities. They were often called Sarts. These people spoke Turkic or Persian languages. Other people were nomadic tribes. These tribes moved from place to place. The society was built on local connections and tribes.

Most people were Muslim. Persian was the main language for writing and law. Many people in the cities spoke two languages. This helped the different groups work together.

Kokand began in the year 1709.

A leader named Shahrukh Biy started it. He was from the Ming tribe of Uzbeks. He built a fortress called Koktonliq Ata near the city of Kokand. For many years, the leaders were from the Shahrukhid dynasty. In 1740, a leader named Abd al-Karim Biy built a new capital. He used the ruins of an old fortress called Eski Orda. This city grew very large as more people moved there. The leaders used titles like "biy" to show their power.

Life in the Khanate relied on farming.

To protect the land, the leaders built a standing army. At first, they used irregular troops. Later, they used muskets, cannons, and artillery. This helped them grow to their biggest size under Madali Khan.

Eventually, the Khanate faced many hard times. There were many wars with neighbors like the Emirate of Bukhara. The Russian Empire also began to move into the region.

In 1865, Russian troops took the city of Tashkent. Later, they took the city of Khujand in 1867. The last ruler was Nasruddin Khan. He fought against the Russian advance. However, the Russian Empire took over the land in 1876. This ended the Khanate of Kokand forever.
