The city feels different from other places in the region. You might notice wide, tree-lined boulevards and old buildings. These structures come from the time of the Russian Empire. Many people on the streets still speak the Russian language.

This area has a very deep history. People lived in this valley during the Chalcolithic period. Archaeologists have even found stone tools from the Stone Age here. In the 5th century, Fergana first appeared in written records. During the 6th and 7th centuries, the Western Turkic Khaganate ruled the area. By the 10th and 11th centuries, it was a very prosperous place. It was one of the largest cities in the valley.

Many things changed the city's name over time. The modern city was founded in 1876 by the Russian Empire. At first, it was called New Margelan. In 1907, it was renamed Skobelov after a military governor. Later, the name changed to Fergana in 1924. This happened after the Soviet Union took control of the region. Today, the city is a major center for many different activities.

Industry plays a huge role in life here. Fergana is an important center for oil refining in Uzbekistan. The first oil refinery was built near the city in 1908. The city also has plants for making textiles and fertilizer. In the 1930s, workers built the Great Fergana Canal. They did almost all of this work by hand. The canal was finished in 1939 and passes through the northern part of the city.

The people of Fergana have a rich culture. In 1911, the population was mostly Russian and Sarts. By 2013, about 90% of the residents were Uzbek. Many other groups live there too, such as Tajiks and Koreans. Sports are also very popular among the people living here. There are now 46,759 football fields and 33 modern tennis courts in the region. You can see many people using the Samo Sports Complex.
