The weather here can be quite extreme. It has a cold semi-arid climate with hot summers and cold winters.

The history of the city goes back many centuries. Its name comes from the local salt mines, which are called "namak kan." People have lived and traded in this area since the 17th century. In the past, people from a city called Aksikent moved here after big earthquakes. The city was once part of the Khanate of Kokand. Later, it became part of the Russian Empire in 1867.

This long history has left many beautiful old buildings for people to see today.

One very special place is the Mullah Kyrgyz Madrasa. It was built in 1910 by a wealthy man who worked with cotton. This building is an important historic monument. It has a small courtyard with 35 rooms for students. The walls are covered in beautiful mosaic tiles. These tiles come in bright colors like white, blue, yellow, and green. You can also see very fine carvings on the wood inside.

Namangan has changed a lot over the years. During Soviet times, many new factories were built in the city. During World War II, the amount of things made in factories grew five times larger. In the late 1800s, most of the work was about processing cotton. Today, the city is a center for light industry. This means many people work in factories that make food and other goods. There are over 400 small and medium businesses working in the city now.

Today, Namangan is the second largest city in Uzbekistan. In 2022, about 668,600 people lived there. Most of the people living in the city are Uzbeks.
