geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Kokand is a busy city in the Fergana Region of eastern Uzbekistan. It sits at the southwestern edge of the Fergana Valley. The city is located southeast of Tashkent and west of Andijan and Fergana. People sometimes call it the "City of Winds." It is a very important place for travel and moving goods. Two main ancient trade routes meet here. One path goes northwest over the mountains toward Tashkent. The other path goes west through the city of Khujand. Because of these paths, Kokand is a main junction in the valley.

This city has a very long and busy history. It is one of the oldest towns in Uzbekistan. Some written records show the town existed as early as the 10th century. In the 1st century BC, the Han dynasty of China conquered the area. Later, the Arabs took control from the Tang Empire. The Mongols also ruined the city in the 13th century. The city we see today began as a fort in 1732. In 1740, it became the capital of the Khanate of Kokand. This kingdom was quite large and reached as far as Bishkek.

Many beautiful and historic buildings still stand in Kokand. The Palace of Khudayar Khan was built between 1863 and 1874. It is a huge royal home with 114 rooms and seven courtyards. The walls feature pretty mosaic tiles and Arabic writing. Another famous site is the Juma Mosque on Chursu Square. It was built by Muhammad Umar Khan between 1812 and 1818. This mosque has a large courtyard and 98 carved redwood columns. These special columns were brought all the way from India.

Kokand is also a place for learning and art. There are many religious schools called madrassahs in the city. One is the Amin Beg Madrassah, which was built in the 1830s. It has a beautiful tiled front that was fixed up in 1913. The city is also a center for education today. It has three institutes, nine colleges, and many other schools. There are also 20 libraries and seven different museums. In 2019, the city held a big festival for people who make things by hand.

Daily life in Kokand is full of movement and work. About 259,700 people live in the city. Many people work as small business owners in outdoor markets. The city is a center for making things like chemicals and machinery. It also makes cotton and food products. Some people work in shops, groceries, or money exchange. Over the last twenty years, the city has grown with new buildings. New houses, cafes, and restaurants have appeared in many districts. It is a place where old history meets a busy modern life.
