The city is a major center for government, politics, and culture. It is also the sixth-largest city in the whole country. Nukus is a busy place where many people work and study.

The climate in Nukus is described as a cold desert climate. This means the weather has very specific patterns. Summers are long, dry, and can get very hot. Winters are much shorter, but they can be cold and snowy. The weather is also very dry throughout the year. Since the Aral Sea and the Amu Darya dried up, the air has become hotter and drier. This change has also affected the health of people living in the area.

The history of Nukus shows how much it has changed. The name comes from the old tribal name of the Karakalpaks. It grew from a small settlement into a modern city in 1932. By the 1950s, it had wide avenues and large public buildings. Because the city was so isolated, it once hosted a research center for the Red Army. In 2002, the United States helped dismantle this chemical research site. This happened through a special program to reduce threats.

There are many amazing things to see in Nukus. The Savitsky Art Museum holds a famous collection of art. It has a huge amount of Russian and Uzbek art from 1918 to 1935. One newspaper even called it one of the most beautiful museums in the world.

The Museum of Local Lore is also very old and unique. It has over 56,000 items, including a stuffed Turanian tiger. You can also visit the Berdakh Museum, which has a beautiful building with six domes.

Nukus connects many different parts of life together. It is a place for learning with many schools and universities. There are also many sports halls, a stadium, and a swimming pool. The city has its own international airport for travelers. In 2019, a new free economic zone was started to help businesses grow. This zone is planned to stay in place for 30 years. Nukus remains a vital hub for the people of Karakalpakstan.
