The climate in Nukus is classified as a cold desert climate. This is known by the Köppen designation BWk. The weather patterns involve long, dry, and very hot summers. Winters are shorter but can be cold and snowy. The region has a very dry continental climate. Since 1960, the environment has changed significantly. The drying of the Aral Sea and the Amu Darya has made the climate hotter and drier. This environmental shift has led to more common health issues due to salt and chemicals in the air.

The history of Nukus is tied to the Karakalpak people. The name Nukus comes from an old tribal name. The city was officially founded in 1932. It grew from a small settlement into a large Soviet city by the 1950s. During this time, it featured broad avenues and large public buildings. Because of its isolation, it hosted a Chemical Research Institute for the Red Army. This was a major center for testing chemical weapons, including the Novichok agent. In 2002, the United States Department of Defense dismantled this institute. This was done through a $6 million Cooperative Threat Reduction program.

Nukus is famous for its significant cultural institutions. The I. V. Savitsky State Museum of Art is a major attraction. It holds the best art collection in the Asian region. The museum contains the largest and second-largest collections of Russian avant-garde works. It features modern Russian and Uzbek art from 1918 to 1935. The collection survived because the city's remoteness limited the reach of Soviet authorities. The museum traces cultural history from the 3rd century BC to the present.

Other museums offer deep looks into local history. The Museum of Local Lore of Karakalpakstan is one of the oldest in Central Asia. It houses over 56,000 exhibits. These include items from archaeological investigations and a stuffed, extinct Turanian tiger. The museum has 21 themed halls covering nature, archaeology, and ethnography. The Berdakh State Museum was built in 1998. It honors the great Karakalpak poet and thinker, Berdakh. The building is three stories tall and features six small domes. It serves as a center for studying the history and culture of the Karakalpak people.

Archaeological sites near the city provide links to the ancient past. Shylpyk is a ring-shaped structure located 43 km south of Nukus. It sits on a conical hill and was built between the 2nd and 4th centuries. It served as a Zoroastrian dakhma, which is a structure used in ancient religious practices. Later, between the 9th and 11th centuries, it functioned as a signal tower. Another site is Tok-kala, located 14 km west of the city. This settlement includes an antique part, an early medieval part, and a burial ground. Excavations there have uncovered ancient ceramic vessels and human remains.

Nukus is also a center for modern education and industry. The city hosts the Karakalpak branch of the Academy of Sciences. There are many higher education institutions, such as Karakalpak State University. The city provides many services, including 51 secondary schools and 52 preschool institutions. For sports, there are about 200 halls and playgrounds. This includes the Turan Stadium, which is the home of the local football club, Aral. In 2019, the Nukus free economic zone was established. This zone aims to attract foreign and domestic investment for 30 years. It focuses on producing products for foreign markets.
