Not long ago, this place was a busy sea port on the Aral Sea. Today, the water is 150 km away from the city. The land where the sea used to be is now the Aralkum Desert. Because of these big changes, many people visit the area to see the landscape. This type of travel is often called disaster tourism.

In the past, Moynaq was a very important center for fishing. The city had tens of thousands of residents living there. People worked in industrial fishing and in making canned food.

However, the sea began to dry up in the 1960s. This happened because the Soviet government diverted the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers. They used the river water to irrigate cotton farms. This caused the sea to evaporate and left the remaining water very salty and toxic.

Life in Moynaq has changed a lot since the water left. The weather is now different because the sea is gone. Summers are hotter than they used to be. Winters are also colder than they were before. Strong winds blow across the dried seabed. These winds kick up poisonous dust storms. These storms can cause many illnesses for the people living nearby. Most of the residents are ethnic Karakalpaks, but many Uzbeks and Kazakhs live there too.

There are many interesting things to see in the area today. You can visit a ship graveyard made of rusting hulls. These are the remains of the old fishing fleet. There is also an Aral Sea Memorial at the north end of town.

A small museum holds paintings and photos of the town's prosperous days. The museum shows how people once made things like fur and rush mats. You can also find saiga antelope in the wild nearby. About 230 species of birds fly through this region on their way from Siberia.

Every year since 2018, Moynaq hosts the Stihia Festival. This is the largest electronic music festival in Central Asia. The name Stihia means "an unstoppable force of nature." This name refers to the environmental disaster and the power of music. In 2019, the event drew 10,000 people to the ship graveyard. The festival includes talks about art, science, and technology. It ends with a ceremony where people burn a large installation of the letters "SEA."
