It is one of the largest canals in the world. This canal moves water from the Amu-Darya River. The water travels across the dry Karakum Desert. This water helps people grow food in the sand. It also sends water to the city of Ashgabat.

This canal is a very important tool for the land.

This canal works by moving water to new places. The water flows from the Amu-Darya River into the canal. It travels across the desert to reach dry areas. This allows farmers to grow crops like cotton. The Soviet Union wanted to grow a lot of cotton. This is called cotton monoculture. The canal also helps boats move on the water. It is navigable over much of its long path.

Building this canal was a very big project. Workers first started in the year 1954. They finished the whole job in 1958. Before this, there was a different plan. That plan was for the Main Turkmen Canal. It would have started near a place called Nukus. That old work stopped after Joseph Stalin died.

Then, leaders chose the current route instead.

There are many facts about this water system. The canal helps supply water to the city of Ashgabat. It also serves cities like Bereket and Gyzylarbat. To help control the water, people built reservoirs. One such place is the Hanhowuz Reservoir.

The Soviet Union even planned to extend it. They wanted it to reach the Caspian Sea one day.

We can see how this canal changes the world. The water makes the desert useful for farming. However, it also caused a big problem. The canal is a major factor in the Aral Sea disaster.
