People used this water for farming. They grew a lot of cotton. This helped the Soviet Union. The canal also sends water to the city of Ashgabat. This city gets much of its water from the canal.

Building the canal was a big job. Workers started in 1954. They finished it in 1958. Before this, people tried to build a different canal. That old plan started near a place called Nukus. Leaders stopped that work after Joseph Stalin died. They chose this new route instead. To help control the water, people made reservoirs. A reservoir is a place that holds water. One is called the Hanhowuz Reservoir. The canal also helps boats move on the water. However, the canal caused a big problem for the Aral Sea. This is a major environmental disaster.
