The desert sits east of the Caspian Sea. To the north, it touches the Kyzylkum Desert. The desert has three different parts. Some parts are high. Other parts are low. Some parts have salt marshes.

It is a dry place. Very little rain falls there each year. Not many people live in the sand. There are many animals to find. You might see lizards, turtles, or snakes. Some small animals like jerboas live there. You can also find foxes and gazelles.

There is a famous spot in the desert. It is called the Darvaza gas crater. Some people call it the "Door to Hell." It is a hole of natural gas. It has been burning since 1971. Many people visit it to see the fire. The desert also has oil and gas. A long canal brings water to the land. This canal is the Karakum Canal. It is the second-largest canal in the world.
