The Karakum Desert is a huge, sandy place in Central Asia. It covers about 70 percent of the country of Turkmenistan.

This desert is the 12th largest in its region. Its name comes from the shale-rich sand under the surface. The land is very dry with very little rain each year. Only one person lives in every 27 square kilometers on average. The desert sits east of the Caspian Sea. To the north, it meets the Kyzylkum Desert of Uzbekistan.

This desert has three distinct areas. The north has high ground called the Trans-Unguz Karakum. The middle part is the low-lying Central Karakum. The southeast part has many salt marshes. There is also a new area called the Aralkum. This is a small desert that grew on the old bed of the Aral Sea. Large irrigation projects caused much of the sea to disappear. Now, only small pieces like Barsakelmes Lake remain. Some parts of the desert have fine mineral dust from nearby farms.

People have lived near this desert for a very long time. In the Uly Balkan mountains, experts found human remains from the Stone Age. There are also many natural resources under the sand. The desert holds large amounts of oil and natural gas. One famous spot is the Darvaza gas crater. Locals call it the "Door to Hell" or the "Gates of Hell." This natural gas crater has been burning since 1971. Hundreds of people visit this fiery site every year.

Water is very important in such a dry land. The Murghab and Tejen rivers flow from the Hindu Kush mountains into the desert. These rivers help people grow crops like cotton. A massive path called the Karakum Canal crosses the desert. It is the second-largest irrigation canal in the world. Workers built it between 1954 and 1958. It is 1,375 kilometers long and carries a lot of water.

There is even a huge man-made lake being built called Golden Age Lake.

Many animals call the Karakum home. You might see lizards, turtles, or snakes crawling in the sand. Small animals like jerboas and gophers live there too. You can also find larger mammals like the corsac fox and the goitered gazelle. Insects like ants, termites, and beetles are everywhere. Birds like desert sparrows fly through the air. The desert is also connected to the world by the Trans-Caspian Railway. This helps move things across the vast, sandy landscape.
