In the past, people called this region Transoxania. Today, the desert is split between three different countries. It is found in Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Most of the desert land is inside Uzbekistan.

Walking through the desert, you would see many different sights. Much of the land is a wide, flat plain. You might see sand dunes called barchans covering the ground. In the northwest, there are areas with clay coatings called takirs.

Some parts of the desert have green oases where plants grow. There are also some high hills and low spots. The weather can get very hot during the summer months. This happens from mid-May until mid-September. In July 1983, a city called Kerki recorded very high temperatures.

Many interesting animals live in this dry land. You might see a Russian tortoise or a large desert monitor lizard. The saiga antelope sometimes travels through the northern part.

There are also special protected areas called reserves. The Kyzylkum Nature Reserve was made in 1971. It is located near the settlement of Dargan Ata. Another place, the Djeyran Reserve, was founded in 1977. This area helps rare animals like the goitered gazelle live safely. You might also find Przewalski's horse or the Turkmenian kulan there.

Scientists love to study the old rocks in the Kyzylkum. These rocks have many fossils from a long time ago. The Bissekty Formation in Uzbekistan is very important for study. It has shown fossils of several early bird species.

People use the desert in many ways today. Local people use the wide spaces to graze livestock. They look after sheep and camels, like dromedaries and Bactrian camels.
