It sits on the Euphrates River near the border of Adıyaman and Şanlıurfa provinces. This dam is a zoned rock-fill dam with a central core. That means it is a massive wall built primarily from rocks. It is the third largest dam in the entire world. The dam was built to create electricity and to help farmers. It was named after Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who founded the Turkish Republic.

This dam works in a few important ways. First, it creates a giant lake called the Atatürk Reservoir. This reservoir holds a huge amount of water for many uses. Second, the dam uses a hydroelectric power plant to make energy. The plant has eight groups of turbines that turn water into power. These turbines can produce 8,900 GWh of electricity every single year. Third, the dam helps water large areas of farmland. It uses two very long tunnels to move water to crops. These are the largest irrigation tunnels in the world.

People worked on this project for a long time. The idea for the project first started in 1970. At first, the plan was for a smaller dam called Karababa. Later, the plan changed to build the much larger Atatürk Dam. Construction on the main dam began in 1983 and ended in 1990. It was built in a record time of about 50 months. The power plant began working in 1992 after the lake filled up. The whole project is part of a larger plan called GAP.

There are many impressive numbers tied to this site. The power plant has a capacity of 2,400 MW. The reservoir is the third largest in Turkey. It covers a very large area and holds 48.7 km3 of water. The irrigation tunnels are each very long and wide. These tunnels carry one-third of the total flow of the Euphrates. Because of this water, cotton production in the region grew a lot. In 2001, the region grew 400,000 metric tons of cotton. This helped the area become a leader in cotton for Turkey.

You might see this dam in your daily life. In the past, the dam was even on a banknote. It was shown on the Turkish one-million-lira bill from 1995 to 2005. The water in the reservoir is so big that local people call it a "sea." It is a place where people go for fishing and fun. The dam also helps stop the river from causing problems. Before the dam, the river had floods in winter and droughts in summer. Now, the dam helps keep the water levels steady for everyone.
