It starts in the Tian Shan mountains in Kyrgyzstan and eastern Uzbekistan. The river begins from two headstreams called the Naryn River and the Kara Darya. These two streams join together in the Fergana Valley. From there, the river flows west and north-west. It travels through Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and southern Kazakhstan. Finally, the water reaches the northern parts of the Aral Sea.

This river is very important for the dry lands around it. It helps water the most productive farming areas in Central Asia. Many local governments have built long systems of canals to move the water. These canals are vital because the region is often very dry. In the 19th century, the Khanate of Kokand rebuilt many of these canals. During the Soviet era, huge irrigation projects were built to grow rice and cotton. These projects moved so much water that the Aral Sea began to disappear.

History has happened along these banks for a very long time. In 329 BC, Alexander the Great reached the river. His army fought a battle called the Battle of Jaxartes against the Saka people. Alexander even placed a garrison in a city he called Alexandria Eschate. This name meant "Alexandria the furthest." Today, that same city is known as Khujand in Tajikistan.

The river has had many different names throughout history. Ancient Greek sources called it the Jaxartes or Iaxartes. Some people think this name came from an Old Persian name meaning "True Pearl." This might describe the color of the water from melting glaciers. In the 16th century, the name "Syr" began to appear. The name Syr Darya comes from Persian words. The second part of the name means "river" or "sea."

Today, people work hard to take care of the river. In 2012, a large natural park opened in Kazakhstan. The Syrdarya–Turkestan State Regional Natural Park helps protect the river plain. It protects plants and animals that are rare or endangered. The park also helps save old historical sites and monuments. Protecting the river is important for the many living things that need it.
