The Syr Darya is a major river in Central Asia.

It starts in the Tian Shan mountains. The water comes from two streams. These are the Naryn River and the Kara Darya. The river flows through Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kazakhstan. It eventually reaches the North Aral Sea.

This river is very important for farming. People use canals to move water to dry fields. These canals help grow crops like cotton and rice. In the past, the Soviet Union built many large projects. They moved a lot of water to the farms. This caused the Aral Sea to shrink. It was once the fourth largest lake in the world.

History is found along the river too. Long ago, Alexander the Great fought a battle here. He named a city nearby Alexandria Eschate. That city is now Khujand. In the mid-1800s, people used steam boats on the water. Today, a large park helps protect the river. It keeps the plants and animals safe.
