geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Ural River is a very important waterway in Eurasia. It flows through both Russia and Kazakhstan. Many people use this river as the boundary between two continents. It marks the line between Europe and Asia. In the city of Orenburg, a bridge even has signs for both sides. One side says "Europe" and the other says "Asia."

The river follows a long and changing path. It begins on the slopes of Mount Kruglaya in the Ural Mountains. At first, it is a typical mountain river. It flows through rocky banks and steep cliffs near Magnitogorsk. Later, it moves through a long canyon in the Guberlinsk Mountains. As it reaches the flat lands of Kazakhstan, the river grows much wider. Finally, it flows into the Caspian Sea.

This river has many different names in history. In the 2nd century, a man named Ptolemy called it Daïkos. Some people believe the name Yaik comes from Turkic languages. In the 10th century, a Byzantine Emperor called it the Geich. The name Ural was chosen later by Catherine II of Russia in 1775. This change happened after a large rebellion by the Yaik Cossacks. The Empress wanted to erase the memory of the revolt.

The Ural is a very large river with many features. It is the third-longest river in Europe. It is also the 18th-longest river in Asia. Most of its water comes from melting snow. This causes big floods in the spring during March and April. Near its end, the river forms a special delta. This delta has a "digitate" shape, which means it looks like a bird's foot.

Many living things depend on the Ural River. The wetlands at the delta are a great place for migrating birds. You might see a great white pelican or a greater flamingo there. Many fish species also visit the river to spawn. The sturgeon is one of the most famous fish here. Long ago, Cossacks used a special tool called a pike pole to catch them. They would even spear fish through the ice in the winter.
