Emirate of Bukhara

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Emirate of Bukhara was a strong land in Central Asia. It lasted from 1785 until 1920. This area sat between two big rivers called the Amu Darya and the Syr Darya. People also called this region Transoxiana. It covered lands that are now in Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Kazakhstan. The emirate was a place where one leader had most of the power. This type of rule is called an absolute monarchy.

Life in the emirate was filled with many different groups. Some people were nomads who moved around the steppes and deserts. Other people were settled in big cities like Bukhara and Samarqand. Many people were bilingual, which means they spoke two languages. They often spoke both Persian and Turkic languages. This helped different groups live together in towns and oases. The people were often mixed, so it was hard to label them by just one group.

A family called the Manghits ruled the land. They were the emirs, or leaders, of the state. The emirate officially began in 1785 when Shah Murad took power. He made his family's rule formal. Unlike other rulers, the emirs used Islamic principles to show they should lead. They took the title of Emir instead of Khan. This was a way to show their importance in the Muslim world.

Religion was a very big part of daily life. Most people followed the Hanafi school of Sunni Islam. Many people also belonged to Sufi brotherhoods. There were smaller groups of Shia Muslims and Jewish communities too. In the cities, Persian was the main language for culture and law. The city of Bukhara was even called "Bukhara the Noble" because of its religious learning.

Changes came to the emirate through wars and new leaders. In 1868, the emirate fought a war with Imperial Russia. Russia won and took many lands, including the city of Samarqand. By 1873, the emirate became a Russian protectorate. This meant Russia had a lot of control over them. Finally, in 1920, the Red Army arrived. They replaced the emirate with the Bukharan People's Soviet Republic.
