Emirate of Bukhara

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Emirate of Bukhara was an absolute monarchy in Central Asia. It existed from 1785 until 1920. This state occupied the region known as Transoxiana. This area lies between the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers. Today, these lands are part of Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Kazakhstan. The emirate was a major center for culture and religion. It played a vital role in the history of the Silk Road regions.

The government was led by the Manghit dynasty. This was a Turco-Mongol tribe of Uzbeks. The emirate officially began in 1785 under the ruler Shah Murad. Before this, the emirs held power as ataliq, which means high-ranking officials or guardians. In 1747, the ataliq Muhammad Rahim Bi murdered Abulfayz Khan. This ended the Janid dynasty and allowed the emirs to gain control. Shah Murad eventually assumed the throne openly to formalize his family's rule. Unlike previous rulers, the emirs did not claim descent from Genghis Khan. Instead, they used Islamic principles to justify their authority. They took the title of Emir rather than Khan.

The emirate was divided into many different administrative parts. During the reign of Amir Nasrullah, the territory reached its greatest extent. At that time, the emirate consisted of 30 regions called begliks. These included famous places like Samarkand, Karshi, and Shahrisabz. Other regions included Kitab, Hisar, and Kulob. The exact layout was sometimes difficult for historians to track. Court historians often gave different accounts of the provinces and lands. This was because the borders and names of regions often shifted over time.

Society was composed of many different ethnic and linguistic groups. People were often bilingual, speaking both Persian and Turkic languages. The population was divided into two main social elements. The first was the nomadic clans of Turkic and Turco-Mongol heritage. These groups included Uzbeks, Turkmens, Kazakhs, and Karakalpaks. They often formed the military and the ruling class. The second element was the settled population of peasants and townspeople. These people mostly spoke Persian and Chagatai. Because people intermixed so much, identities were often overlapping and shifting.

Religion was a central pillar of Bukharan life. Most people followed the Hanafi school of Sunni Islam. Many belonged to Sufi brotherhoods, such as the Naqshbandi Order. There were also significant minority groups in the emirate. These included Twelver Shia Muslims, often of Iranian descent. In the eastern Pamir Mountains, people practiced Ismailism. Bukharan Jews lived mostly in the urban centers of Bukhara and Samarqand. There was also a small Hindu diaspora present in the region.

Culture in the emirate was deeply influenced by Persian traditions. Persian was the primary language of civilization and the official court language. The cities of Bukhara and Samarqand were hubs of Persianate culture. Bukhara was even called "Bukhara the Noble" due to its religious education. The rulers used Persian "mirrors for princes" literature to guide their leadership. Poetry in both Persian and Turkic was a major part of court life. Famous poets like Jami, Hafez, and Amir Khusrow were part of this cultural world.

In the late 19th century, the emirate faced great political changes. In 1868, the emirate fought a war with Imperial Russia. Russia won the conflict and annexed much of the territory. This included the important city of Samarkand. By 1873, the remaining parts of the emirate became a Russian protectorate. The Russians also forced the abolition of the Bukhara slave trade in 1873. Eventually, the emirate came to an end in 1920. The Red Army conquered the territory and established the Bukharan People's Soviet Republic.
