Dayan Khan was a powerful Mongol leader. His birth name was Batumöngke. He was born in the year 1472. His title, "Dayan," means "the whole" or "long lasting." This name was very fitting for him. He was the longest reigning khagan of the unified Mongols. He ruled from 1480 until 1517.

His early life was very difficult and dangerous. His father, Bayanmongke, was a leader of the Borjigin clan. After his father died, Batumöngke had to hide to stay safe. His mother, Shiker Taiko, gave him to a family to nurse him. Later, a leader named Mandukhai Khatun found him. She was the widow of a former leader named Manduul Khan. She helped him become the king at only eight years old.

Dayan Khan and Mandukhai worked as a team. They wanted to bring all the Mongol people back together. They fought many wars to make this happen. They defeated the Oirat people to reclaim control. They also defeated a warlord named Ismayil Taishi in 1483. By 1495, he had even won control of the Three Guards. These were lands that paid tribute to the Ming dynasty.

He also had many conflicts with the Ming dynasty in China. At first, he wanted to have open trade with them. He sent messengers with gifts to start a trade contract. However, the Ming court killed one of his messengers. This led Dayan Khan to launch military trips into China. He built forts in places like Xuanhua and Datong. In 1517, his power reached a high point when he moved toward Beijing.

Dayan Khan changed how the Mongol lands were managed. He divided the Eastern Mongols into six groups called tumens. These groups were used for military and government tasks. He gave these groups to his sons to rule as chiefs. This created a stable system for the Borjigin family. It kept peace on the Mongolian Plateau for one hundred years. Many later Mongol princes were his direct descendants.
