His early life was very hard. He had to hide to stay safe. A wise woman named Mandukhai helped him. She was a widow of a former leader. She helped him become king when he was eight. They worked together to lead the people.

Dayan Khan was a very strong ruler. He brought many Mongol groups back together. He defeated many warlords to do this. He also fought with the Ming dynasty in China. He wanted to trade with them. When trade failed, he led his armies to fight.

He made a smart plan for his land. He divided the people into six groups. We call these groups tumens. He gave these groups to his sons to rule. This helped keep the land peaceful for a hundred years. Many later princes were his descendants. He is remembered as a leader who brought glory back to his people.
