His birth name was Zhu Qiyu, and he was born on September 11, 1428. He was the second son of the Xuande Emperor. His older brother, Emperor Yingzong, ruled the country first. Zhu Qiyu was known to be a shy and quiet man. He did not even want power at first. He lived in a place called Shandong as an adult.

In 1449, a big problem happened at the northern border. The Mongols, led by Esen Taishi, launched a large attack. Emperor Yingzong went to lead the army himself. However, the Mongols won a battle at Tumu Fortress. They captured the Emperor and took him away. This news shocked everyone in the country. Because the leader was gone, Zhu Qiyu became the new emperor on September 4, 1449. He took the name Jingtai, which means "bright exhalation."

During his eight years of rule, the Emperor worked hard. He had a very important helper named Yu Qian.

Yu Qian was a minister who helped organize the defense of Beijing. Together, they fixed important things like the Grand Canal. They also worked on the dam system for the Yellow River. These repairs helped the country become stronger and wealthier. They also made the army better by creating new training units. Yu Qian organized soldiers into five large training divisions in 1451.

Life was not always easy for the people during this time. Between 1450 and 1456, there were many hard weather events. Some areas had famines, while others had heavy rains and cold weather. The government had to spend a lot of money to help people. Even with these hard times, some beautiful things were made. People created a special kind of art called wire enamel. This art is known as Jingtai-lan. It is a famous style of decoration from this era.

The end of his reign was very sudden. In 1457, the Emperor became quite ill. He also had no heir because his son had died earlier. In February 1457, a group of officials held a palace coup. This means they took control of the palace to change the leader. They brought Emperor Yingzong back to the throne. The Jingtai Emperor died just one month after this happened.
