The Jingtai Emperor was the seventh ruler of the Ming dynasty.

His personal name was Zhu Qiyu. He reigned from 1449 to 1457. He was the second son of the Xuande Emperor. His older brother, Emperor Yingzong, was the previous ruler. Zhu Qiyu was born on September 11, 1428. As an adult, he lived in Shandong. He was known for being shy and indecisive. He did not originally desire political power.

His rise to the throne followed a major military crisis. In 1449, the Mongols launched a massive invasion. They were led by a ruler named Esen Taishi. Emperor Yingzong left Zhu Qiyu in charge of government affairs. The Emperor went to lead the army personally. However, the Mongols won the Battle of Tumu Fortress. They defeated the Ming army and captured the Emperor.

This event caused great shock across the country.

Zhu Qiyu became the new emperor on September 4, 1449. He adopted the era name Jingtai, meaning "bright exhalation." He named his brother the Emperor Emeritus. This was an honorary title of high rank. A prominent minister named Yu Qian helped stabilize the government.

Yu Qian had organized the defense of Beijing. The Mongols had attempted to siege the city. They stayed for four days before abandoning the effort. The Jingtai Emperor then took full control of the state.

During his eight-year reign, the government focused on infrastructure. The Emperor and Yu Qian repaired the Grand Canal. They also worked on the dam system for the Yellow River. These projects helped the economy grow. The administration also saw significant military reforms. In 1451, Yu Qian created five training divisions. These divisions consisted of 100,000 soldiers. By 1452, he added 50,000 more soldiers. He also created ten more training units. He unified the command of the capital garrison. He removed eunuchs from supervisory roles to improve coordination.

Life was difficult for many people during this period. Between 1450 and 1456, the weather was very unstable. Shandong suffered a famine in 1450. Heavy rains and cold weather hit northern China and the Yangtze River. A drought occurred in 1455, followed by summer rains in 1456. The state treasury was depleted from providing aid. The government also dealt with tax arrears. Despite these hardships, a new art form flourished. This was wire enamel decoration, known as Jingtai-lan. It remains a famous style of decoration today.

The Emperor's relationship with his brother was very tense. Emperor Yingzong was eventually released by the Mongols. However, the Jingtai Emperor did not allow him to return to power. Instead, he placed his brother under house arrest. He confined him to the Southern Palace in the Forbidden City. This decision was driven by fear of his brother's influence. This caution shaped much of his foreign policy. The Emperor's reign was marked by this internal family conflict.

The end of the Jingtai era was sudden and political. The Emperor fell ill in early 1457. He had no designated heir because his son died earlier. In February 1457, a group of officials staged a palace coup. They overthrew the Jingtai Emperor to restore Emperor Yingzong. The Jingtai Emperor died just one month later on March 14, 1457.
