A powerful leader named Empress Dowager Cixi chose him to lead. Because he was so small, his father, Prince Chun, helped rule for him. This role is called a regent. His life was very different from most children.

Life inside the Forbidden City was full of strict rules.

Puyi lived in a huge palace in Beijing. He was surrounded by many servants called eunuchs. These men did every job for him. They dressed him and even blew on his soup to cool it.

He lived a life of luxury, but he was also very lonely. He did not see his real mother for seven years. Most of the adults around him were strangers who followed strict palace etiquette.

Everything changed because of a big revolt called the Xinhai Revolution.

Later, Puyi made a choice that changed his life again.
