Cixi was chosen to live in the palace in 1851. She was one of 60 women selected for the emperor. She eventually became a high-ranking consort. Unlike many other women, Cixi could read and write Chinese. This helped her learn how to govern the country.

Cixi's path to power began with her son. In 1856, she gave birth to a son named Zaichun. He became the Tongzhi Emperor when his father died in 1861. At that time, the boy was only five years old. Cixi became an empress dowager to help him. An empress dowager is the mother of an emperor. She shared this role with Empress Dowager Ci'an.

Cixi and Ci'an ruled together for many years. They worked to manage the large Chinese empire.

Cixi was a very smart political strategist. In 1861, she took part in the Xinyou Coup. This was a plan to take control of the government. She worked with officials like Prince Gong to remove other leaders.

The leaders she removed were called the eight regents. Cixi and Ci'an became the main decision-makers. This was unusual because women rarely held such power. Cixi ruled "from behind the curtain." This meant she made big choices for the empire. She held this control until her death in 1908.

Her time as leader included many big changes. Cixi oversaw the Tongzhi Restoration. During this time, she supported new military and technology tools.

However, she also had many difficult conflicts. In 1898, she stopped the Hundred Days' Reform. She placed the Guangxu Emperor under house arrest. Later, she supported the Boxer Rebellion against foreign powers. This led to the Eight-Nation Alliance occupying Beijing.

After these hard times, she tried to start new reforms.

Today, historians have many different views of Cixi.

Some people say she was a very harsh leader. They think she was too resistant to change. Other historians see her in a different way. They believe she was a practical leader. They say she kept order during a very unstable time. They credit her with supporting Peking University. They also note her support for the Beiyang Army. Her life remains a very important part of history.
