Many people at the time did not agree with him.

Kang grew up studying very hard for big exams. He studied the old teachings of Confucius. However, he did not like the way students were tested. The tests used very strict and artificial writing styles. To relax, Kang practiced Buddhist meditation. During these quiet moments, he had a deep vision. He believed he could study every book to help humanity. This vision guided his work for the rest of his life.

In 1879, Kang traveled to the city of Hong Kong. He saw how wealthy and successful the city was. This made him very interested in Western culture. Later, he bought many Western books in Shanghai. These books helped him build his own new ideas. He even started a group to help strengthen China. This group was called the Society for the Study of National Strengthening. He also started a journal to share his thoughts with others.

In 1898, Kang worked with the Guangxu Emperor. They started a period of change called the Hundred Days' Reform. They wanted to make the government more modern. But a powerful woman named Empress Dowager Cixi led a coup. She stopped the reforms and put the Emperor under house arrest. Kang had to flee his home to stay safe.
