Jamphel Gyatso was the 8th Dalai Lama of Tibet. He was a very important religious leader. He was born in 1758 at a place called Lhari Gang. This place is in the Upper Ü-Tsang region of southwestern Tibet.

His father was named Sonam Dhargye. His mother was named Phuntsok Wangmo. They both came from a region called Kham. Some say his family were descendants of a hero named Dhrala Tsegyal. This hero was part of the famous Gesar epic.

He became a leader when he was very young. In 1762, he was taken to the city of Lhasa. He was only five years old at that time.

He was crowned in the Potala Palace. The ceremony happened in the 'Beyond Mind Temple' of the Second Potala. A leader named Demo Tulku Jamphel Yeshi ran the ceremony. This leader was a Regent. A Regent is a person who rules for someone else. This was necessary because the Dalai Lama was still a child.

Many years passed while he was growing up. He had a teacher named Yongzin Yeshe Gyaltsen.

For a long time, the Regents helped him rule Tibet. In 1784, the Regent went to China as an ambassador. Jamphel Gyatso ruled by himself for a short time. The Regent came back to help him in 1790. During this time, there was a conflict with Nepal. Soldiers called Gurkhas invaded southern Tibet in 1790. They took places like Nyalam and Gyirong. They even took the city of Shigatse and the Tashilhunpo Monastery.

Later, troops from the Qing dynasty arrived to help. The Gurkhas were driven back to Nepal in 1791. A peace treaty was finally made in 1796.

Jamphel Gyatso did many special things for his people. In 1783, he built the Norbulingka Park. He also built a Summer Palace on the edge of Lhasa.

He also asked for a beautiful copper statue of the Buddha to be made. This statue was for the people of Southern Tibet. Many years later, in the 1960s, the statue was moved to India. It is kept at the Library of Tibetan Works & Archives in Dharamsala.

People remember him as a very calm person. He was a mild and contemplative man.

He did not have a big interest in worldly or political affairs. He was happy to let the Regent do the hard work of ruling. He lived a long life for his time. He died in 1804. He was 47 years old when he passed away. His life was a mix of quiet thought and big changes for Tibet.
