Some Tibetan communities live far away in places like the United States and Canada. This large group of people is connected by their culture and their languages. They have built a unique way of life on the high Tibetan Plateau.

Many Tibetans follow the religion of Tibetan Buddhism. This faith influences their beautiful art, drama, and architecture.

Some people follow the indigenous Bon religion instead. There are also smaller groups of Tibetan Muslims and Christians. The high and harsh geography of the land has also shaped their lives. Because the environment is tough, Tibetans developed special medicine and unique cuisine.

Stories about where Tibetans came from vary. A traditional myth says they descend from a man and a rock ogress.

Scientists have different ideas about their history. They think many Tibetic speakers come from the ancient Qiang people. Genetic studies show they are related to other East Asian populations. Some research links them to ancient people who lived on the plateau long ago. These studies help us understand how people moved across Asia over many thousands of years.

Classical Tibetan is a major language used for writing Buddhist books. Some dialects, like those from Ü-Tsang, are very similar. Other languages, like Dzongkha or Sherpa, are seen as separate. Even some people known as ethnic Tibetans may speak Chinese as their first language.

Today, the Tibetan people live in many different ways. The 14th Dalai Lama is a very important spiritual leader.
