Bonpos believe Tonpa Shenrab was the founder. He is seen as a Buddha. Some say he lived long ago. He was born to a royal family. He taught people how to live well. He even used barley flour to make animal shapes for offerings. This helped people learn his ways.

There are different types of Bon. Some parts are very old. These are called prehistoric Bon. Other parts are called New Bon. This type started around the 14th century. It has some ideas from Tibetan Buddhism.

Bon has a special symbol. It is a left-facing swastika. This symbol is called Yungdrung. It stands for eternity.
