He was a high holy man. Many people called him the Bearded Lama. He was part of the Drukpa Kagyu school. This is a group of Buddhist followers. He was born at Ralung Monastery in Tibet. He was a prince and a spiritual leader.

In 1616, he left Tibet for Bhutan. He went there to find a new home. He built large forts called dzongs. One was Simtokha Dzong. These forts helped him lead the land. He brought many small groups together. This made Bhutan one single nation. He also helped create a unique culture.

He made a special way to rule. This is called a dual system. One leader helped with religion. This leader was the Je Khenpo. A second leader helped with daily life. This leader was the Druk Desi. This way of ruling still exists today in a new form.

Ngawang Namgyal died in 1651. Leaders kept his death a secret for many years. They wanted to keep the peace. Today, Bhutan celebrates his life with a special holiday.
