Many people knew him as The Bearded Lama. He was a high religious leader in the Drukpa Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. He is most famous for being the person who unified Bhutan into one single nation. Because of his great work, he was given the special title Zhabdrung Rinpoche. This title means "at whose feet one submits." He helped create a culture for Bhutan that was different from Tibet. His life changed the way people lived in that part of the world.

His journey began in Tibet at the Ralung Monastery. He was born to a father named Mipham Tenpa’i Nyima and a mother named Sönam Pelgyi Butri. He was a direct descendant of Tsangpa Gyare, who started the Drukpa lineage. Ngawang Namgyal was recognized as a very important reincarnation of a teacher named Kunkhyen Pema Karpo. This gave him great spiritual authority among his followers. However, not everyone agreed with his leadership at the time. A rival group supported a different person for the same role. This led to many disagreements and conflicts in Tibet.

In 1616, Ngawang Namgyal had to leave Tibet behind. He faced a hard situation with local leaders who wanted his sacred religious relics. After having some visions, he decided to move to western Bhutan.

He first founded the Cheri Monastery in the Thimphu valley. Later, in 1629, he built the Simtokha Dzong. A dzong is a large fort used for many things. This fort helped him watch the paths between different valleys. By building these strong places, he could better lead the people.

Ngawang Namgyal worked hard to bring different groups together. In the 1630s, he unified many small, warring areas into one country. He even allowed the Nyingma sect to keep their traditions in the east.

He also set up a unique way to run the country. This was called a dual system of government. One leader, the Je Khenpo, looked after religious matters. A second leader, the Druk Desi, handled the daily business of the land. This system was based on the Tsa Yig legal code. This way of ruling still exists in a different form today.

Ngawang Namgyal died in the year 1651. To prevent fighting among local governors, they kept his death a secret for fifty-four years. They told people he was just on a very long, silent retreat.

Today, his life is still honored by many people. Bhutan has a national holiday called Zhabdrung Kuchoe to remember him. This holiday falls on the tenth day of the third month in the Bhutanese calendar. People hold special prayers and ceremonies in many large monasteries. His work helped shape the nation of Bhutan as we know it now.
