His name means "the king in the heart of Imerina." He ruled the Kingdom of Imerina from 1787 until he died in 1810. Before he took power, the land had been divided for a long time. A civil war had lasted for 77 years and weakened the people. He worked very hard to bring these divided lands back together. His goal was to unite all of Madagascar under Merina rule.

He was born around 1745 in a place called Ikaloy. His birth name was Ramboasalamarazaka, but his parents gave him the humble name Ramboasalama. This was done to protect him from jealous rivals or evil spirits. As a young man, he worked as a merchant. He gained a great reputation for helping common people. He defended them against raids and fought against corruption. This made him very popular with the people of Ambohimanga.

His path to the throne involved a difficult struggle with his uncle, King Andrianjafy. In 1787, when he was 42 years old, the conflict reached a turning point. After a series of battles, Andrianampoinimerina successfully took power. He established his spiritual capital at the fortified town of Ambohimanga.

As king, he spent many years expanding his reach across the highlands. He conquered Antananarivo in 1793 and made it his political capital in 1794.

By 1795, he had reunited all the territories of the old Imerina kingdom. He also absorbed many other groups like the Betsileo and Sihanaka. He even married 12 women to help form alliances with powerful nobles. He placed each wife in a house at one of the twelve sacred hills.

In the later part of his reign, he tried to unite all 18 ethnic groups on the island. He sent royal messengers to invite other groups to join him peacefully. Some groups accepted his invitations, but others like the Sakalava resisted his rule. Even though he did not finish everything, his work changed the island forever. His son, Radama I, took over after him. Radama I continued his father's work and achieved much of his vision.
