The Merina Kingdom was a strong state located off the coast of Southeast Africa. It grew to rule most of the island of Madagascar. The kingdom started in the Central Highlands region. This area was home to the Merina people. They had a spiritual capital at Ambohimanga. Their political capital was located at Antananarivo. Today, Antananarivo is still the seat of government for Madagascar.

History shows how the kingdom grew through many leaders. It began with a leader named Andriamanelo in 1540. His son was Ralambo, who ruled from 1575 to 1612. Ralambo gave the land the name Imerina. He also learned to keep zebu cattle for food. He created the first royal army to protect the people. He even built special pens for the cattle.

Later, a king named Andrianjaka expanded the rule. He captured a major stronghold on the hill of Analamanga. He built a fortified compound there called a rova. This place became the heart of Antananarivo. The Rova included traditional royal houses and tombs. These buildings were very important to the people's spirit. They stayed standing until a fire in 1995.

By the 1800s, the kingdom was very large. Leaders like Radama I used British training and firearms. This helped the Merina control more of the island. However, this time was also very difficult. Between 1828 and 1840, many people were killed or enslaved. The kingdom faced many challenges from neighboring tribes. Some groups saw the Merina expansion as a form of colonialism.

Eventually, France began to take control of the land. France invaded the kingdom in 1883 and again in 1894. These battles were known as the Franco-Hova Wars. In 1896, the kingdom became a protectorate of France. By 1897, France made the island a colony. This ended the rule of the Merina kings and queens. The last ruler was Queen Ranavalona III. She was sent away to live on Réunion Island and later in Algeria.
