First, Madagascar split from Africa about 180 million years ago. Later, it split from the Indian subcontinent about 90 million years ago. This happened after a huge landmass called Gondwana broke apart. Because the island was alone, special life grew there. Over 90% of the wildlife is endemic. This means these animals live nowhere else on Earth.

People first came to the island a long time ago.

Austronesian peoples likely arrived in outrigger canoes from Indonesia. They probably arrived between 500 and 700 CE. Later, Bantu groups came from East Africa across the Mozambique Channel. These different groups joined together over many years. They created a rich Malagasy culture. There are 18 or more different groups of people. The Merina people live in the central highlands.
