Madagascar is a member of several groups like the United Nations and the African Union.

The island's unique nature comes from its deep geological history. Long ago, a supercontinent called Gondwana began to break apart. Madagascar split from Africa during the Early Jurassic period, about 180 million years ago. Later, it separated from the Indian subcontinent around 90 million years ago. This long isolation allowed plants and animals to evolve in seclusion. Today, Madagascar is a biodiversity hotspot. It is one of 17 megadiverse countries in the world. Over 90% of its wildlife is endemic. Endemic means these species are found nowhere else on Earth.

Human settlement began relatively recently in Earth's history. Austronesian peoples likely arrived in outrigger canoes from present-day Indonesia. This probably happened between 500 and 700 CE. Later, around the ninth century, Bantu groups arrived from East Africa. They crossed the Mozambique Channel to reach the island. These different groups eventually blended to form Malagasy culture. There are 18 or more classified peoples in Madagascar. The Merina people are the most numerous and live in the central highlands.

The history of governance on the island has changed many times. Until the late 18th century, many shifting alliances ruled different areas. In the early 19th century, Merina nobles united much of the island. They ruled as the Kingdom of Madagascar. This monarchy ended in 1897 when France annexed the territory. Madagascar finally gained its independence in 1960.

The name "Madagascar" has several mysterious theories regarding its origin. One idea is that it comes from the word "Malay." This would link the name to the Austronesian roots of the people. An 1154 map by Al-Idrisi calls the island "Gesira Malai." Another theory suggests it is a version of "Mogadishu." This theory stems from explorer Marco Polo's writings. He mentioned a land called "Madageiscar" south of Socotra. A different account by Jerome Megizer suggests a different story. He wrote that kings from Mogadishu landed there after a storm. They supposedly named the land "Magadoxo" after their arrival.

Modern life in Madagascar is shaped by its climate and economy. The island has a subtropical to tropical maritime climate.
